SUMMARY:Blockchain-based tracking of steel products’ properties enhanced by zero-knowledge proofs
DESCRIPTION:Blockchain technology is a potential game changer for the entire chain of the manufacturing industry. Over the past years, reliable tracking of goods using blockchain technology has become a major topic as it enhances transparency and traceability of products while revealing information like the history and origin of the products. While it is important to use blockchain technology to create a reliable and transparent traceability, such transparency partly reveals confidential information about production processes. This kind of scenario is not peculiar to special steel producers supplying sensitive industries, but also to conventional production chains where confidential information might be derived from the published information. In our paper, we will reveal how zero-knowledge proofs (ZK proofs) create increased transparent tracking while keeping confidential data. The standard EN 10373 describes certification of metallic products complying with EN 10204 using computational models based on sensor data captured during the production processes. By combining EN 10373 with blockchain technology and ZK proofs, producers can successfully compute the product’s quality without revealing anything about the production details.
